Faculty meetings and committee documents are horrible. (And don't get me started on the prose English professors write when they think no one is watching. What Mellel calls outline view is really a view of all of the many structural elements in your document: not just headings and subheadings, but also charts, equations, figures, pictures, tables. You have to override the prcesstext method. Even in Dynamic Text box, you cannot do the partial underline in the expression builder. And I'm in an university Department of English where you would think the complete nature of a text would matter. You cannot even have mixed font style (bold face/underline in the text box. My colleagues are insensitive to any form of styling that might actually make documents readable. For my Word-dependent friends and colleagues, I bought a copy of Nisus Writer Express, which opens Word documents just fine. You can get Word documents and out, but it may not be seamless. Mellel has both, but it does not, so far as I know, focus on being note-for-note compatible with Word. Have you looked at it? It has styles but not an outline mode. Exchanging documents seems to be behind the latest iteration of Pages. Others here have and could perhaps chime in to tell you how it works in terms of exchanging documents. If you need to handle incoming (Word) files gracefully, then you're going to have to stick with Word.benightedly yours,john I came this close to buying Scrivener, but in the end couldn't justify the expense given how much I was doing the same thing in Textmate - someone even wrote me a script so that I could handle QT files from within TM, allowing me to do transcription.If all you need to do is output RTF/DOC files, then any number of apps, including the two I mentioned, will suit you. Word 2004's crashing on any minor style change just drove me bonkers.I keep hoping that OmniOutliner will grow that little extra bit of page/print view that would make it a suitable substitute for producing larger documents.I probably went the ass-end wrong direction, but I now use Textmate and work with files and folders in the drawer with MultiMarkdown and CSS style sheets as my production environment. Alas, the styles in Word was what finally made me give up on it for my own document production. You can change this with CSS (see example below). Select the outline entry first and then select your marker color in the palette. You can temporarily give outline entries a colored underline using the Markers in the Marker palette. The content inside is typically displayed with an underline. There's a way to get much of what you want, if you're willing to use a colored underline to mark the pieces of the document you're working on. That that outline view was tightly tied to styles made it even better. The tag represents some text that is unarticulated and styled differently from normal text, such as misspelled words or proper names in Chinese text.The easy toggle between it and page view - something close to what the document would look like printed out - was what cleaved me to Word for so long.
